INSTALLING IDEASTRACKER

What are the steps to a successful installation?

Download the software

Anyone can download IdeasTracker from the download page - you can't use it until you purchase a serial number, though.

Organise your hosting

Are you hosting IdeasTracker, or is it being hosted by a third-party internet service provider? If you are putting it on a separate domain name, register the domain name and ensure the account is set up as per the system requirements.

Make sure you know your FTP passwords, database name and password.

Upload all the files to the server. There's a readme file in the root directory of the IdeasTracker files, as well as an implementation guide.

Ensure you transfer in binary not ascii (if you have the option). Transferring in ascii will cause some key files to not work.

Before you purchase a serial number check you can see the file yourdomain.suffix/config.php and log in using the temporary username and password.

Purchase a serial number

The serial number, or 'key', will be emailed to you. You have five days from the day it's emailed to you to install IdeasTracker or, as a security measure, the key expires.

It's absolutely critical you enter the correct email, domain and company name details when ordering your key as these cannot be changed and lock IdeasTracker to your machine.

Install and setup IdeasTracker

Follow the installation details for installing the database and registering your key.

Now you're ready to set up the parameters such as locations and idea statuses within IdeasTracker.

SETTING UP IDEASTRACKER

Once you've installed IdeasTracker you'll need to set up the parameters to personalise it to your company. Below is a brief list of tasks to complete before creating the first User. It's explained in much more detail in the implementation guide and instruction manual supplied with the software.

Set up locations and departments Each branch within your company should be included - this is how you track the implementation of knowledge throughout your branches. Also include your departments so you can mark knowledge as being specific to a department, if relevant.
Set up your statuses and idea categories

Statuses are how you track the implementation of an idea. Categories are like folders in which ideas reside.

Create and notify your administrators

You'll need a person (or people) to be administrators. This is a part time job in a small company.

Generate custom forms and data to populate the News page

Create any custom knowledge management forms, and enter some data into the News page. Now you're ready to introduce your staff to IdeasTracker.
